Farmington Hills

Established suburban living with diverse homes, parks, recreation, and convenient access.

Welcome to Farmington Hills

Located in central Oakland County, Farmington Hills is a large, established suburban community known for its tree-lined neighborhoods, parks and recreation, strong business presence, and convenient location. Home to more than 80,000 residents, the city offers plenty of everyday amenities while maintaining a surprisingly peaceful residential feel in many of its neighborhoods.

Farmington Hills officially became a city in 1973, although the area’s history stretches back to the early settlement of Farmington Township in the 1800s. Today, Farmington Hills and neighboring Farmington remain closely connected, sharing schools, libraries, recreation programs, and community traditions while maintaining their own distinct identities. Farmington Hills is the larger and more spread-out of the two, with residential neighborhoods, commercial corridors, parks, and businesses woven throughout the city.

Housing in Farmington Hills is especially varied. Buyers will find classic brick ranches, mid-century homes, colonials, contemporary houses, condominiums, townhomes, and larger custom residences tucked into wooded neighborhoods. Some areas feature sidewalks and traditional subdivision streets, while others are known for winding roads, mature trees, rolling terrain, and larger lots. This variety gives Farmington Hills options for buyers at many different stages of life.

Rather than having one traditional downtown, shopping, dining, and everyday conveniences are spread along major corridors such as Orchard Lake Road, Northwestern Highway, Grand River Avenue, and 12 Mile Road. Residents are also just minutes from Downtown Farmington and its restaurants, shops, Farmers Market, Civic Theater, Riley Park, and community events. Farmington Hills itself is a significant employment center, with businesses representing automotive and mobility, healthcare, finance, technology, and professional services.

Families are primarily served by Farmington Public Schools, with portions of Farmington Hills also falling within the Walled Lake Consolidated and Clarenceville school districts. Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus is located within the city, providing additional opportunities for higher education, career training, and continuing education close to home.

Outdoor recreation is an important part of life in Farmington Hills. Heritage Park offers more than 200 acres of woods, trails, playgrounds, a splash pad, picnic areas, and the Farmington Hills Nature Center. In 2026, the park entered a new chapter through a long-term partnership between Farmington Hills and Oakland County Parks aimed at future investment and improvements. Founders Sports Park is another local favorite for athletics and outdoor recreation, while The Hawk – Farmington Hills Community Center has become a major destination for swimming, fitness, sports, theatre, arts, classes, and community programming.

One of Farmington Hills’ biggest advantages is how easily it balances residential living with convenience. I-696, I-275, M-5, and other major roads provide easy connections to Novi, Southfield, Livonia, Detroit, and communities throughout metro Detroit. Yet once you’re inside many of its established neighborhoods, mature trees, larger lots, parks, and quiet streets can make the city feel much farther removed from the activity around it.

With its diverse housing, established neighborhoods, abundant recreation, strong schools, business community, and central Oakland County location, Farmington Hills offers a comfortable balance of space and convenience. It’s a community where residents can enjoy the trails at Heritage Park, spend an afternoon at The Hawk, head into Downtown Farmington for dinner, and still come home to a quiet neighborhood — a combination that has kept generations of residents putting down roots here.
